Like a Mist

The mist danced across the water like spirits of days gone by. Sitting at the splintery picnic table, I watched the spring water bubble up endlessly, hearing the sound of rushing water as the ever-flowing spring poured into the river. As I sat there, the words of God flooded my mind: “Your life is but a mist…” (James 4:14). “Streams of living water will flow from within you…” (John 7:38). “The water that I give will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (John 4:14).

This scene caused me to reflect on what truly matters. As I watched the mist frolic on the water, I was reminded of just how quickly moments slip away and how steadily time marches on. The mist can be seen and even felt, but once the sun warms the air above the spring, it disappears—leaving no trace of its existence. Isn’t this like the moments that pass through our lives? We experience them, sometimes we even try to grasp them, yet they vanish almost as quickly as they came. The beauty of that fragile, fleeting mist compelled me to ponder the difference between things that last and things that perish.
Just as quickly as the mist vanished, so do we. One second we’re here and the next we’re not. Knowing that we are but a vapor changes the way we should view our days. Life is fragile and brief, yet it also carries a quiet beauty. Recognizing that we are like a mist reminds us not only of our weakness but also of the preciousness of every moment God gives us.
Because life passes so quickly, we are called to live with intention and focus. Every day provides an opportunity to live out our faith—to be faithful in the ordinary moments, in the conversations, in the quiet choices no one else sees. Yet how often do we allow earthly distractions to pull our attention away? I know that far too often I can become caught up in things that ultimately fade. When we remember how brief life truly is, it encourages us to let go of regrets about the past, to release the distractions that compete for our attention, and to shift our focus toward what is eternal—toward the things that truly matter and will endure beyond this life.
At first glance, reflecting on life’s brevity can feel sobering, even depressing. The thought that we are but a vapor can make everything seem fragile and uncertain. But the story does not end there. For the believer, the mist is not the final word.
Life is brief, but this is not all there is. The mist will fade and our earthly bodies will perish, but the living water will not. The One who promised streams of living water has also promised eternal life. Though our days on earth pass quickly, those who belong to Him will be sustained forever. What vanishes like mist in this life gives way to something far greater—an everlasting life nourished by the unending spring of God Himself.
THINK ABOUT IT
What are some distractions or pursuits in your life that may be temporary or fading rather than eternal? How might God be inviting you to shift your focus?
When distractions pull your attention away from God, what helps you gently return your focus to Him and the things that truly matter?
