The Stronghold of My Life

“The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear?  The Lord is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid?”  Psalm 27:1

Have you ever stopped to think about what a stronghold actually is? I know I have. It’s one of those words we read in Scripture so often that it can easily pass by without much thought. But when we slow down and really consider the image it creates, we begin to see the depth of what God is communicating. The word itself carries the picture of something solid, secure, and impossible to overrun—a place where fear loses its grip because safety is certain.

Historically speaking, a stronghold is an unassailable fortress—a fortified place built to withstand attack and resist capture. In the ancient world, strongholds were often built on high ground and surrounded by thick stone walls, watchtowers, and guarded gates designed to repel invading armies. When danger came, people could retreat there for protection. Kings used them to secure their authority and defend their cities.

But in Psalm 27, David isn’t talking about a physical fortress.

He is talking about God Himself.

When David says the Lord is the stronghold of his life, he isn’t describing occasional help in times of trouble. He is describing continual protection—a place of safety that does not collapse when threats arise. Because God Himself guides, delivers, and shields us, no enemy ultimately prevails. Our confidence can rest in Him.

If I’m honest, though, confidence isn’t always easy for me. I often find fear creeping in—sometimes quietly, sometimes loudly. Maybe you feel that way too. Sometimes it shows up in the form of worry about what might happen, or uncertainty about the future. Other times it’s just a subtle uneasiness that makes it hard to rest fully in God’s promises.

The beautiful reality of a stronghold is this: the battle is fought from a place of safety, not uncertainty.  Our protection does not ultimately depend on our circumstances, or even on what we do or fail to do. It rests on the character of God. Because He is strong, we do not have to live under the weight of fear or dread, whatever form it takes.

So how do we truly lean into the God who is our stronghold? REST... Remember that word? Remember Jesus said we could come to Him for REST? It’s an invitation to stop striving for our own security and instead settle into the safety that only He provides.

REST

Recognize fear

Exchange lies for truth

Seek God in prayer

Trust by acting in obedience

THINK ABOUT IT

In what ways are you sometimes tempted to look for security in circumstances, plans, or your own efforts rather than resting in God?

Looking at the word REST (Recognize fear, Exchange lies for truth, Seek God in prayer, Trust by acting in obedience), which step feels most important for you to practice right now as you rely on God as your stronghold?
